Introducing Samuel Scott, aka Scott Summers -- Cyclops (Marvel Comics)

Previous Name: Scott Summers
Myth: Marvel Comics - X-Men
Past Life Information: Supposedly (it's a long story involving space pirates) Scott and his brother Alex were orphaned at an early age. During the plane crash that separated him from his parents, Scott first manifested beams of streaming energy from his eyes to cushion their fall. Mild brain damage he sustained in the crash means that when the mutation fully unleashed, in his teens, he couldn't ever turn his mutation off. Ever. If his eyes were open, they were ripping holes in everything he saw. He has had constant headaches since that moment. Luckily, Scott was found by Professor Charles Xavier, fitted with glasses of ruby quartz (the one thing Scott's blasts can't destroy; he sees the world in a reddish hue) and Scott became like a son to the man. Not to mention the first X-Man: sworn to protect the lives of a world that hates and fears mutants just like him.

He fell in love with Jean Grey (she became a cosmic being and then died - more than once), married her clone the first time Jean died (turned out to be an evil goblin queen), had a son (had to send him to the future; he came back all grown up and badass), has a daughter from another dimension (sometimes she REALLY hates him), and fell into a habit of dating telepaths whenever he wasn't with or mourning Jean, who he believed was the love of his life.

He once merged with an ancient evil, Apocalypse, to save his loved ones, and that changed Scott forever: his strict, bleak sides became more prominent, and he became less able to laugh. He distanced himself from Jean, had an emotional affair with Emma Frost, and when Jean died again, he promised to her that he would try to be happy with Emma. And he did try. They ran Professor X's school for gifted youngsters together, and Scott fulfilled his legacy of leading the X-Men.

It's all been a bit of a mess ever since: Professor X has proven to have some major flaws (wiping Scott's memory of A WHOLE BROTHER, capturing a WHOLE PERSON and treating them like AI in their simulation room), Scott still struggles to find himself after the Apocalypse tragedy, and also, one time -- right after finally getting control of his optic blasts -- he died.

But wait, there's more: after coming back, he tried to disband the X-Men, was possessed by the Shadow King, tormented by the media and public as the world's most public-facing mutant (which he focuses on way more than winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom)... and then, okay. Look, sometimes Scott, on the sheer power of his optic blasts, could host the Phoenix Force. Until the last time, he couldn't handle it. He became Dark Phoenix and killed Professor X: his true father figure, the vision of the X-Men. Some people will never, ever forgive him for that. And Scott may never forgive himself.

Current Name: Samuel Scott
Age: 27
Occupation: Commercial airline pilot.
Personality: Sam is a problem solver and strategic thinker. Give him chess or a complicated world-building video game and he will be so happy. He's a little anal -- he makes his bed will perfectly tight hospital corners every morning, and he says things like "a place for everything and everything in its place" and means it -- and he is very much a creature of habit and routine. These things comfort him. Sam doesn't have a great deal of self-esteem and he's pretty guarded when it comes to matters of the heart. He's an introvert and has only a few friends, but he is loyal to those friends for laugh. You wouldn't know it if you only knew Sam casually, but he has a dry and deadpan sense of humor that's actually pretty good. He's deeply romantic, though he keeps that deeply hidden, and he truly believes in love. He loves to fly, and he likes planes like he's a wide-eyed ten year old boy. That part of him has never changed. He's really good at math and can play the piano; he has a ton of DJ-adjacent software on his laptop and sometimes plays around remixing songs. He keeps this pretty quiet. He keeps everything quiet.

Background: Samuel lived with his mother and his aunt in a small, sleepy Connecticut hamlet. His father died before he was born, but the two sisters raised Scott with a lot of love. They thought he was their funny, serious old soul boy, and he was always encouraged to follow his interests. That meant college to study aviation and engineering, then flight school. He moved to New Orleans about six months ago for his real job as a commercial airline pilot, and he's struggling to adjust to his new life. He has a roommate that doesn't seem to know that you should remove dust from surfaces, and he doesn't have many favorite places yet. But he'll find them. He already knows the bar where he likes to get a beer sometimes -- everyone is over 40 and quiet and they nod when Scott walks in; sometimes, one of them will have a deck of cards. When he's not working, he's probably in his room watching sci-fi shows, doing a little light gaming, or ironing his slacks. I'm sorry; it's just who he is.
